Flux Apogee, the latest EP collaboration between Toronto MC Routiger Slob and Russian producer Ilya Id, accomplishes more in just 16 minutes than most full-length albums. Divided between swagger and sincerity, the cost of pleasure, humour found in depression. Every track produces a constant, captivating struggle with its own desire to be understood and the impossibility of describing what it wants to convey, as Routiger deals in relentlessly dense prose that wrestles with Ilya’s equally overwhelming and heavy electro-industrial production.

The effect is a constant state of dread, as if at any moment the entire thing might collapse under the weight of its own ambition. And yet the crash never comes; it is kept in suspension, so that the ever-present apogee is held through a machine like flux. While many artists make the mistake of presenting too much material and consequently doing none of it right, Flux Apogee’s refined five tracks successfully carry and contain its maximalist aesthetic, a descent into into an overclocked sound so thick and depraved it could pass as an enhanced interrogation technique.
