about

To say that rapper/producer Zak G has carved a niche into the New Haven hip hop scene with his unique blend of industrial noise and punk-inspired beats might be an understatement. Now, almost 5 years since his self-released debut album Wasteland and with Milled Pavement Records at his back, he’s ready to unleash Mutant into the world.

While in some ways this album is an evolution of the abrasive sounds that Zak G has been cultivating for years, he has also taken this opportunity to switch things up. The buzzing synthesizers and feedback loops haven’t gone anywhere, but while Wasteland was droning, moody, and personal, Mutant is fast paced and political. The hardcore punk influences are significantly more direct this time around, but that’s not to say there aren’t more overt moments of Def Jux era hip hop as well. DJ Mo Niklz lays chopped up samples and scratches across the entire album and fellow “left of center” rap artists such as JE Double F and label-mate Brzowski add some welcome lyrical diversity. In true hip hop tradition, there’s even a posse cut featuring fellow New Haven rapper Old Self and NYC duo Bald Afro to round things out. Al Pist, of the iconic CT punk band The Pist, provides an appropriately intense hook as the sole non-rapper feature.

This album was written explicitly with the live show in mind, so it’s only appropriate that this release be followed with an East Coast tour in the summer as well as various weekend runs throughout the remainder of the year. On the digital side, several music videos are in the works to provide a new medium to discover and experience the album.
